    Early Entrance to Kindergarten!
    Early Entrance to Kindergarten

A student must be five years old on or before August 1 for that student to attend Kindergarten in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The date of August 1 is a revision to Kentucky law that had used October 1 as the deadline.

In accordance with that law (KRS 158.031(6), Johnson County Schools has established criteria for early entrance into Kindergarten. A student who turns five years old between August 2nd and October 1st may be eligible for early entry, provided that the student meets criteria established by the Johnson County Board of Education.

The following is the criteria for early entrance to Kindergarten:
    - Child must be a resident of Johnson County, Kentucky or a district with a non-resident agreement; and
    - Child must turn five between August 2nd and October 1st of the admission year; and
    - Child must perform at acceptable level on K readiness screener.

The Johnson County Schools’ Early Admissions Committee will determine which children may be eligible for early entrance, based on these criteria. Within two weeks of a child’s assessment, notification of committee decisions will be provided either in writing or by phone.

Those interested in children being considered for early entrance for the 2017-18 school year should complete and return the following items by June 1, 2017to the Johnson County Board of Education 253 N Mayo Trail Paintsville KY 41240
    - Petition for Early Entrance to Kindergarten application

Dates set at this time for the Kindergarten Readiness Screener for early entrance is: July 13 and 14 at the Johnson County Board Office.  Please confirm ahead with Mrs. Shauna Patton, Ms. Robin Salyer, or Mr. Robert Younce.  You will schedule a test time for your child once the Petition has been completed and accepted.

Those with questions about the process should contact Robert Younce Director of Pupil Personnel, Johnson County Schools at (606) 789-2530.
